How to Master the Writing Process

How to Master the Writing Process

At first glace, writing looks simple. You sit down and put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and just let your brain flow onto the paper or screen, right? Wrong. The best writers actually follow a specific writing process to ensure they turn out the best essays and content around. Once you understand the basics, you can use the writing process, too.

Writing Process Definition: What Is It?

Why is the writing process important and just what is it anyway? If you want consistent results, any artist or professional will tell you that you need to have a system in place, or a process. If you’re making pizza, you’re always going to start with the dough, for example, then move on to the sauce, cheese and toppings. The final step in the process is baking. The same goes for writing. If you follow a process or system, you will always have great results.

It's important to be consistent in your writing, whether you do it for fun, work or school. Presenting consistently high quality in every area of your writing will help you with your grades and your earnings in the long run.

6 Steps of the Writing Process

Now that you understand why is the writing process important, you’ll need to learn the 6 steps of the writing process. When teaching the writing process, professors divide it into two sections, the pre-writing phase and the writing phase. Don’t skip the pre-writing part, since it is essential for the quality of writing. Each phase has three steps. Here are the first three, in the pre-writing phase.

Step One: Select Your Topic

The very first part of the writing process is deciding what to write about. In a school or work setting, you may be given a topic. Otherwise, you’ll need to come up with something to write about yourself.

Step Two: Collect Ideas

With a topic in mind, write down all the things you want to say about it. This may require some research to come up with more ideas.

Step Three: Get Organized

Go back over all the ideas you have collected and put them in order. You may end up discarding some of them and deciding not to use them. It can be helpful to write the ideas on slips of paper and move them around until you have the structure you want, with the ideas in order.

Now, we move on to the writing phase.

Step Four: Write

Writing the actual piece is only a middle step in the writing process, but it is certain important. Use your outline created in step three to create a well laid out piece of content. At this point, you don’t have to worry too much about getting things perfect. Just get the essay or article written.

Step Five: Review Your Work

Reviewing is a big part of the writing process. First, go over the content yourself and pick out any mistakes you have made. It often helps to come back to the writing after a few days to get a fresh perspective. You can also ask a friend or family member to read over the piece and critique it for you.

Step Six: Edit and Revise

This step is where you really start to polish up your content. Go back over everything you’ve written and add in anything you need to make it clearer or make corrections suggested by a friend. Then go back over the whole thing to check for spelling and grammar. Watch out for words that are used excessively, too.

The final two steps in the writing process may be repeated as needed until the piece is absolutely perfect.
