Section 1

Be very specific about which academic subject is your favorite. Ideally, choose a subject that relates to your future academic or professional goals. In this section, you will also share how your interest started and developed over time. 

 

Do: Choose only one subject

Do: Be specific within a subject. For example, if you choose math, you may tighten your focus to Geometry. 

Do: Write about how you first discovered the subject and what held your interest over time. 

 

Don’t: List a series of subjects you like.

Among academic subjects, I favor [name of subject.] I gravitate to this subject because [briefly explain why you are drawn to the subject.] I am captivated by this subject because I enjoy [briefly describe aspects of this subject you enjoy, eg “studying nature/encountering great ideas/practicing writing/understanding the physical world/solving problems.”]

 

Section 2

How has your interest in your favorite subject shown up in the rest of your life? Here is where you share ways that your favorite subject applies to your life outside of academics. 

 

Do: Discuss experiences relevant to your favorite subject. These may be extracurriculars, volunteer work or community service.

Do: Write about how you may have shared your interest to motivate or inspire others.

Applying your Interest

My appreciation for [name of subject] has influenced my life choices. As a result of my interest, I have [briefly describe an experience you have had related to this subject, eg “joined study groups/participated in a research project/performed at an event/volunteered as a tutor/pursued advanced studies.”]

Section 3

This is where you write about how your interest in your favorite subject contributes to your future academic or professional goals. 

 

Do: Discuss your intentions to pursue your interest in either a future academic or vocational setting.

Do: Maintain a goal-oriented attitude.

Future Pursuits

In the future, I plan to continue studying [subject] and pursue [describe a future goal related to this subject, eg “a career in medicine/writing a novel/humanitarian work/advanced research/professional performance.”] I can also apply my love for [name of subject] to [briefly describe another future goal related to your favorite subject.]
